Most children say their first words during the first year of their life, mostly around their 12th month.
However, it is not uncommon for some children to speak a little later in their life! This is more common with boys than girls.
You should also bear in mind that each child is an individual that grows and develops on its own pace. There is no reason to worry!
Below you will find some signs which reveal that your child is ready to say the first words!
The Child points at he wants with his finger
Pointing at something shows interest. Interest means that, sooner or later, the child will ask for what he wants with words.
The Child starts to understand what you are saying to him
Understanding what you are saying to him can lead to speech. If your child seems to understand everything you or anyone else is saying to him, just wait for his first words to pop out soon!
The Child uses gestures and facial expressions to communicate
Initially, many children communicate in this way which shows that they have developed facial expressions before speech.
The Child is grunting
It may seem strange to you, but surveys show that babies who are grunting and using gestures to show what they want have a rich vocabulary once their linguistic competence develops, even if that comes with a delay.
If your child does not show any of these signs, you should consult your pediatrician. Generally speaking, however, there is no reason for you to worry just because your child is 18 months old and has not yet spoken.
